After the success of the traditional canoe race called ‘Camakau’ on Fulaga in Lau last Friday, the organising committee is planning for a bigger event for the next edition.

The event was won by Naividamu Village followed by Muanaicake and Muanaira.

The team from Ogea ranked last after their canoe capsized.

Prizes ranged from chainsaw to brush cutter.

Facilitator Laisenia Seru said the event revived the traditional value of canoeing on the island.

“For me, the only take away was to see my people smile,” Mr Seru said.

“We hope that we have more sponsors so that we can organize a bigger event,” he said.

Committee member and local singer, Talei Draunibaka, encouraged people to support the event because of its traditional value.

“The spirit of togetherness is what really got to me, just how everyone was running up and down the beach and the community coming together,” she said.

“Four villages coming together as one. That, for me, was quite emotional,” Ms Draunibaka said
