The Catholic Church donated $10,000 to Father Law Home in Wailekutu, Lami, today, to support operational costs at the aged-care facility.
Head of the Catholic Church and leader of the Archdiocese of Suva Archbishop Peter Loy Chong, presented the cheque during a Christmas visit with the Sacred Heart Cathedral choir, who performed carols for the residents.
“Just a small donation from the church to show our support for something that Jesus did – to show love and care for people like you,” Archbishop Chong said.

The donation comes from the Catholic Church’s annual appeal, with plans to increase support through monthly collections next year.
Father Law Home manager Joeli Moceivale said the funds would help meet rising operational expenses.
“We received a $10,000 cheque and mostly this money will be banked into our bank account and mostly it will be used on operational costs, which we really need,” Mr Moceivale said.
“It’s very expensive to run a home, but we are thankful that the church has donated some money.”

Founded in 1954, Father Law Home was originally established to house homeless elderly Chinese men in Fiji. It now caters to men and women of all races who have nowhere else to live.
Sister Rosa Domowai, head of the Sisters at Father Law Home, thanked the Archbishop and choir for their visit.
“Thank you for being here with us today. We really appreciate that,” Sister Rosa said.
The home currently has 24 residents with capacity for 30, supported by 12 full-time staff.
Archbishop Chong said the visit reflected the church’s commitment to caring for elderly people without other support, particularly during the Christmas season.
