The Waivaka Village in Namosi has become the latest rural community to benefit from improved digital access following the commissioning of a Starlink satellite connectivity set by the Minister for Policing and Communications, Ioane Naivalurua.
The commissioning, held yesterday, marked a significant milestone in the Government’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure inclusive access to information and communication technologies across Fiji.
Minister Naivalurua said the initiative reflected the Government’s strong commitment to digital inclusion, particularly for rural and maritime communities, where access to reliable connectivity has long been a challenge.

“Access to digital services is no longer a luxury but a necessity for education, health services, business development and staying connected with loved ones,” he said.
The Waivaka installation is part of the Universal Service satellite community Wi‑Fi project, with nearby villages Narukunibua, Nasigatoka and Namosi also identified as the first rollout sites under this phase of the programme.
“This initiative is not just about technology; it is about access, inclusion and opportunity,” Minister Naivalurua said.
“It ensures that every Fijian, regardless of where they live, can be part of our nation’s digital future.”
He highlighted that improved connectivity would enable students to access online learning resources, allow local businesses to reach wider markets, strengthen access to essential services, and help families stay connected with relatives locally and abroad.
Villagers were also given the opportunity to engage directly with the Minister and the visiting team, raising questions about the Starlink installation, its usage and its long‑term impact on the community.
Minister Naivalurua acknowledged the role of Telecom Fiji Limited in supporting the initiative, describing the project as a shared national effort to ensure no community is left behind in Fiji’s digital transformation.
“Our focus is not just about being connected, but about being beyond connected, and connectivity must lead to empowerment, opportunity and progress,” he said.
He added that the Government would continue to support digital skills development, community‑led initiatives and local enterprise participation to ensure the technology delivers meaningful benefits.
The Minister was accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Communications, the Government ITC team and the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji.
During his visit to Namosi, Mr Naivalurua also visited the Wainadoi Community Police Post, where he met officers on duty, received an update on operations and encouraged them to continue serving with integrity in the year ahead.
