A grassroots youth initiative in Qauia, Lami, is transforming young lives and helping restore peace in a community once labelled a crime-prone “red zone”.

The initiative, led by Taufa Qoro and a group of youths, began as a qiri kava (tin band) performance for New Year celebrations but has since evolved into a platform aimed at reducing criminal activity among young people in the area.

Ms Qoro, who is from Navoci, Nadi, with maternal ties to Saunaka, said the group was formed with a simple goal — to provide young people with a positive alternative.

“We knew we couldn’t stop crime completely, but we believed we could minimise it,” she said.

“Qiri kava has become a positive space where our young boys build friendships, discipline and purpose instead of turning to the wrong path.”

What started with only a few boys has now grown into a structured and organised youth group.

The initiative has helped create job opportunities, strengthened relationships among young people and fostered unity within the community.

Ms Qoro said many of the boys lived in the same area but barely knew each other before joining the programme.

“This is more than performance — it is a way of reconnecting our youths and giving them confidence,” she said.

“Many of them have talent, but they don’t always know where to use it.”

Corporate support

The group has also received support from corporate partners.

CJ Patel Group invited the Qauia Qiri Kava Boys to perform at new product launches, providing wider recognition and exposure.

CJ Patel Group marketing manager Monisha Prasad said the company was proud to support the initiative.

“We are delighted to welcome Bongo, Fun Flavour and the Lami Qiri Kava Boys to our head office for this special celebration,” Ms Prasad said.

“Events like this remind us of the strength of our community and the importance of preserving and sharing our cultural traditions.”

She said home brands such as Bongo and Rewa remained deeply rooted in the community, making the partnership especially meaningful.

Ms Qoro said there were plans to expand the programme this year to include young women who had expressed interest in joining.

As the school year begins, some youths will return to class while others prepare to seek employment.

Ms Qoro is calling on organisations and individuals to support the growing initiative and help nurture young talent.

“If anyone would like to hire us to perform, or support these young boys in any way, please don’t hesitate to contact us,” she said.

Ms Qoro believes similar programmes across Fiji can play a vital role in guiding young people away from crime and towards leadership, culture and pride.
