For Adi Mere Varanisese of Vunimoli, Labasa, selling root crops is more than just a livelihood, it is a journey of sacrifice, resilience and love for her family.
The mother of four and wife to Apenisa Vatu, has spent years turning her farm’s harvest into a source of income. Before coming to the Labasa Municipal Market, the 66-year-old mother used to sell cassava from home.
Over time, her small venture became the foundation that supported her children’s education.

“Selling root crops has been my main source of income,” Ms Varanisese said. “Through this I was able to let my children study.”
The work has not been without challenges. She admits that some days demand for cassava and dalo is low.
“At times, no one buys them. It becomes a struggle to make money but I do not want to give up,” she said.
These days, age has slowed her down. Instead of selling daily, she now comes to the market twice a week. Yet her determination remains unshaken.
“I still want to continue because this is what sustains us,” she said.
On their farm, Ms Varanisese and her husband mostly grow cassava and dalo. Each market day, she rises before dawn to catch the first bus into town. Her husband helps load the sacks of produce before she begins her long day.
For Ms Varanisese said, farming and selling root crops is not simply about survival. It is about the dignity of hard work, the love of family, and the pride of standing tall despite life’s struggles.
