Villagers of Buretu in Tailevu now have a safer place to shelter when disaster struck, after Government commissioned a $220,000 evacuation centre.

Usually, the families of Buretu in Tailevu would trek to the neighbouring Daku Village for shelter during disasters.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Sakiasi Ditoka said the upgraded community hall would protect families during extreme weather events.

“The Government’s priority is to ensure that every Fijian, wherever they live, is protected and supported in times of need,” Mr Ditoka said during the commissioning last Friday.

“This investment is about ensuring that our communities are safe, that families have secure spaces during disasters, and that development reaches every corner of our nation.”

The project included retrofitting the existing community hall, improving sanitation systems, and structural reinforcements.

Village headman Manasa Sovaki said the facility was desperately needed as rising sea levels increasingly threatened coastal families.

“Our village is very prone to seawater intrusion, and over the years, rising sea levels have made it difficult for families living close to the shore,” Mr Sovaki said.

“This new community hall and evacuation centre is a blessing for us.

“It gives our people a safe place to shelter when disasters strike,” he said.

Beyond disaster response, the hall will serve as a hub for community activities, leadership training, and village development planning.

Mr Ditoka urged Buretu residents to remain vigilant as Fiji approaches cyclone season.
