Students from Suva Muslim College say their visit to an old people’s home last Saturday strengthened their sense of compassion, empathy and community service.
Student Council president Faisal Hanif said she was proud to be part of the outreach initiative, which gave students the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the community.
“I feel really proud to have been part of this visit. It was a meaningful experience that allowed us to step outside our school environment and do something kind for others,” she said.

Ms Hanif said the visit had a positive impact on elderly residents, who benefited from companionship and conversation.
“I think our visit made the elderly residents feel happy and cared for. Spending time with them and simply being there helped reduce their loneliness,” she said.
She said community outreach activities help students understand the needs of others and learn that service is not always about money, but about time, respect and kindness.
“It is important because it helps us understand the needs of others in our community. It also teaches us that helping people is not always about money, but about time, respect and kindness,” she said.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms Hanif said interacting directly with the elderly helped students develop empathy and appreciation.
“Being there in person helped us see how the elderly live and what they go through. This made us more understanding and caring,” she said.
She encouraged other students to take part in similar initiatives, saying even small efforts can make a difference.
“I would encourage other students to get involved in community service whenever they can. Even small efforts can make a big difference,” she said.
The visit also served as a life lesson, reminding students to value elders and show kindness.
The outreach programme included conversations and light entertainment for residents.
The Student Council acknowledged principal Mr Shiraaz Ali for his support, saying his encouragement made the visit possible.
