Vanuakula residents in Naitasiri are taking stronger action to keep their surroundings clean.

This follows a government-supported waste management awareness programme led by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

Community leaders say the initiative is already helping families understand how proper waste disposal can prevent serious diseases such as dengue fever and leptospirosis.

Village registered nurse Makelesi Liku said the programme has motivated residents to take extra precautions in maintaining a cleaner environment and protecting public health.

“We are so happy with the government assistance that has enabled us to take extra precautions in keeping our environment clean to prevent infections and diseases like dengue and leptospirosis, as these can be avoided,” she said.

Ms Liku said community members, including youth and women’s groups, have agreed to work together to maintain cleanliness across the village and strengthen awareness on healthy living practices.

“It all starts from home,” she said. “Everyone has a responsibility to ensure that the community is safe from health issues, and these good habits must be taught from home.”

The waste management awareness programme has been an eye-opener for many residents, encouraging better waste disposal practices and helping people understand the long-term benefits of sustainability and environmental protection.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the ministry to improve waste management practices, reduce environmental health risks and encourage communities to take collective responsibility for cleaner and healthier surroundings.
