A 76-year-old man charged with wrongful confinement, rape and sexual assault of a nine-year-old child will be taking his plea next week.

Nacanieli Kue appeared at the High Court in Lautoka yesterday before Justice Chamath Morais and was represented by Legal Aid Commission lawyer Kelly Vulimainadave.

The accused is alleged to have committed the offences on December 14, last year in the Western Division.

For the first count of wrongful confinement, the accused wrongfully confined the victim at Lautoka, for the second count of rape he allegedly raped a child under the age of 13 years while for the third count of sexual assault, it is alleged that he unlawfully and indecently assaulted the victim.

Ms Vulimainadave told the court that she needed time to file the accused’s plea with regards to the three charges.

The court heard that the state had yet to respond to the accused’s bail application.

Justice Morais adjourned the case to March 22 for a plea, and for the state to provide a response for the bail application.

The accused was remanded in custody.
