A 49-year-old man charged with stealing a Bank of South Pacific (BSP) ATM card from an elderly man has been granted bail by the Suva Magistrates Court.

Niraj Prasad is accused of stealing the BSP ATM card belonging to 86-year-old Malakai Kauwale. The card, valued at $10, was allegedly taken on January 5 in Suva City. Prasad has been charged with one count of theft.

He appeared before Magistrate Charles Ratakele yesterday.

During the hearing, Prasad’s uncle and father stood as sureties and told the court they were willing to take responsibility for him while he remains on bail.

The court heard that Prasad will reside with his father as part of his bail conditions. After considering submissions made on his behalf, Magistrate Ratakele granted bail.

No plea was taken during the hearing. The matter has been adjourned to March 10, when Prasad is expected to formally enter his plea.
