A 27-year-old man accused of deceiving an elderly pensioner at a bank ATM in Ba is expected to appear in the Ba Magistrates Court charged with multiple offences related to an alleged theft.

Police said the accused allegedly targeted an 81-year-old man, Mani Lal of Vatulaulau Stage 2, at a Bank of the South Pacific (BSP) ATM in Ba Town on Saturday, February 7, at about 10am.

The senior citizen had gone to withdraw his government assistance payment and, because of his age, sought help from a person nearby whom he trusted.

A complaint was lodged two days later.

Police said the accused is known to them and has pending cases for similar offences.

National Senior Citizens Committee chairman Vineel Nand condemned the alleged act and called for swift action.

He urged Police to apprehend those responsible and ensure tougher penalties for crimes targeting elderly people.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and come together to protect our seniors. Every elderly person deserves to live with dignity, respect and safety,” Mr Nand said.
