A 24-year-old Fijian Broadcasting Corporation Bula FM radio announcer fronted the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday, charged with one count of Malicious Act.

She is alleged to have posted comments on social media calling on people to stone vehicles during curfew hours.

Alisi Koroi is alleged, between April 7 and 8, to have disturbed the public peace by advising people, in the iTaukei language, on her Facebook page, to stone vehicles during curfew hours.

She was produced before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Ravi Kumar said Koroi was a public figure and the case was of national interest.

“The Police are risking their lives to protect the public and she is posting things on her social media where a lot of people follow her,” he said.

Sergeant Kumar objected to bail and requested that the court remand Koroi.

Koroi was remanded in custody and the Chief Magistrate ordered the accused to file a proper bail application through her Legal Aid lawyer.

The case has been adjourned to April 20.
