Court gives DPP deadline to consolidate charges against suspended officers

The Suva Magistrates Court has given the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) until January 19 to consolidate charges against two suspended senior police officers accused in a major drug case.
The officers, Sevuloni Lubi and Ratu Lote Lewaivuna, are charged in connection with the alleged transportation of 4.7 kilograms of methamphetamine in September 2025. They face a joint charge of possession of illicit drugs and unlawful importation.
Lubi and Lewaivuna appeared before Resident Magistrate Josaia Waqaivolavola today.

During the hearing, the court was told that the prosecution had not yet filed the required affidavit.
State prosecutor Unal Lal said the prosecution was still awaiting the affidavit from a police officer in Labasa, despite being given 14 days to comply with the court’s earlier direction.
Defence lawyer Kalisito Maisamoa criticised the delay, describing the explanation as a “lame excuse” and arguing that the prosecution had failed to comply with the court’s instructions despite having sufficient time.
The matter has been adjourned to January 19 for further proceedings.
