The Director for Lands has been ordered to pay businessman Johnson Cheer and operators of Samabula Cake Shop, Michael and Joseph Cheer, $800,000.

The ruling was made by the Civil High Court on August 19. The matter was first filed in court in August 2016.

The court found that the Director of Lands and Registrar of Titles had exceeded their jurisdiction when they had acted ultra vires or outside the authority in cancellation of two leases by the Registrar of Titles.

The leases were passed on to Johnson, Michael and Joseph Cheer after the death of the original lease holder Lem Kue.

Justice Deepthi Amaratunga had also ordered that the cost of this action was summarily assessed at $4500 to be paid by the defendants.
