The High Court in Suva has granted time to the State prosecution to file Information and Disclosures in the case of a 65-year-old fisherman charged for rape.

The accused appeared before Judge Justice Riyaz Hamza on Tuesday.

He is charged for the rape of his 10-year-old granddaughter in Suva.

The alleged incident occurred on November 5, 2019, at Suva, where the accused is alleged to have raped his granddaughter while she was asleep with her siblings and the accused.

Justice Hamza told the accused that since he was the grandfather of the complainant, the court could not grant him bail at this stage.

He ordered the accused to file a formal bail application through his counsel.

The accused has been remanded in custody and the matter has been adjourned to January 25, 2020, for mention.
