Former TLTB legal officer, businessman convicted for bribery offences

A former iTaukei Lands Trust Board (TLTB) legal officer and a businessman have been convicted over corrupt dealings linked to lease applications.
The duo were convicted of bribery offences totaling up to $9,250 by the Labasa Magistrates Court.
Former iTLTB legal officer (North) Kelepi Ratule was convicted on four counts of bribery brought by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

Varun Consultants and Investment director Varun Anand was convicted on two counts of offering advantages.
The court heard that between November 1 and December 31, 2019, Ratule solicited $8,000 from Anand to perform acts in his capacity as a public servant.
Anand offered $1,250 in advantages to Ratule for the same purpose.
In one instance, Ratule sought favours from Anand, who in return requested updates on iTLTB applications lodged by his consultancy clients.
In another, Ratule asked Anand to pay for a fare and later provided information on certain leases, assuring assistance.
Resident Magistrate Safaira Ratu said the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt on all six counts and convicted both men.
Ratule and Anand have 28 days to appeal their convictions.
Ratule was represented by Nemani Tuifagalele and Anand by John Prasad. FICAC counsel Sameea Nisa appeared for the State.
