Human trafficking accused to stand trial next year

A woman accused of helping recruit another woman for overseas work while allegedly being reckless as to whether she would be exploited is set to stand trial next year.
Torika Tabua appeared before Justice Riyaz Hamza in the Lautoka High Court last Friday charged with one count of trafficking in persons.
The State alleges Tabua was first offered a job through Facebook but declined the offer.

It is alleged she then referred the opportunity to the complainant and helped arrange her departure from Fiji to Egypt to work as a babysitter, while being reckless as to whether the complainant would be exploited.
The alleged offence is said to have occurred between January 1 and June 17, 2022, in Nadi.
Tabua has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The court was told all pre-trial conference documents had been filed and served.
The trial has been scheduled from March 22 to March 26, 2027.
The matter was adjourned to October 15 for a pre-trial hearing. Tabua’s bail was extended.
