A viral Facebook post accusing a prominent Suva lawyer of criminal activity has triggered legal action, with a formal cease and desist notice issued.
Devanesh Sharma, a senior lawyer and partner at R. Patel Lawyers, has moved against Faith Grace over the post published around April 28, which quickly gained traction online.
The post accused Mr Sharma of involvement in drug trafficking and money laundering, referring to him as “The Collector”, and linked him to claims that former Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem rigged the 2018 General Election.
In response, Mr Sharma has denied all allegations, describing them as false and damaging. He said he has never been involved in any criminal activity and was not part of any events mentioned in the post.
Mr Sharma confirmed he acts as legal counsel for both Sayed-Khaiyum and Saneem, stressing that representing clients is a protected legal right.
The notice argues the claims are defamatory under Fiji law and may also breach online safety regulations. It also references international observer findings that described the 2018 election as credible, rejecting claims of rigging.
Mr Sharma is demanding the removal of the post, a public apology, and an end to further allegations, warning that failure to comply could result in court action.
Authorities including the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption, as well as Meta Platforms, have been copied into the notice.
