Man Gets Eight Months For Beating Partner With A Firewood

A man from Cakaudrove, who beat his de-facto partner with a firewood was sentenced to eight months imprisonment by the Magistrates Court in Savusavu.

Furthermore, he was issued a permanent Domestic Violence Retraining Order to protect the victim for the rest of her life.

The man pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.

On April 23, 2020, when the offender returned from fishing, he took a firewood and began beating the victim’s hands and legs and punched and slapped her face.

The court heard that it was an unprovoked act on the victim.

In his sentence at the Magistrate Court on Monday, Magistrate Timoci Qalinauci told the offender that he had no right to hit the victim.

“The victim is not your punching bag or an inanimate object to unleash your anger on her,” Magistrate Qalinauci said.

“The victim is a human being and your defacto partner.”

The de facto partner had informed the court that they had reconciled.

Magistrate Qalinauci said: “I will not accept reconciliation and the law is clear that domestic violence offence is not a reconcilable offence.”

“Your case is not suitable for a suspended sentence.”
