Man Jailed For Raping Niece
She was under the care of the offender because she had no other place to go

A 37-year-old self-employed man will spend 13 years behind bars for raping his niece.
The offender has been convicted and jailed for two counts of rape and one count of resisting arrest.
He raped his niece when she was 12 years old on October 5, 2018 at Samabula.

The offender knew that the victim was from a broken family.
She was under the care of the offender because she had no other place to go.
The court heard that the offender used to drink at home and be harsh towards her.
She found the offender’s house not conducive for her education and went to her mother’s place.
When she was returning home from school, the offender went to Suva bus stand to meet her and insisted for her to accompany him under the pretence that she was supposed to pick some herbal medicine for her grandmother.
The offender took her to Wairua Road and went down one hill where he pushed her down to the mud.
The offender then kissed and undressed her.
He threatened to kill her if she shouted and told her that he wanted to do that to her long ago.
He then raped the victim and told her not to tell anyone of what had happened.
Justice Aruna Aluthge, while sentencing the offender, said it was unlawful and the forcible invasion of the victim’s privacy and a gross violation of her person.
