A man charged with allegedly assaulting his grandson has been remanded in custody after being denied bail by the Nadi Magistrates Court.

Jone Narawa appeared before Magistrate Mareta Tikoisuva yesterday charged with one count of assault.

It is alleged that on January 10, Narawa assaulted his 16-year-old grandson.

Police prosecutor Constable Jeremaia Gasaiwai objected to bail, telling the court the alleged offence falls under the Domestic Violence Act.

When asked to state his grounds for bail, Narawa told the court he was caring for his 84-year-old mother.

Magistrate Tikoisuva requested medical documents to support the claim, but none were produced.

Narawa was remanded in custody, and the matter was adjourned to February 4 for further proceedings at the Nadi Magistrates Court.
