Marau pleads guilty to Lakeba cannabis charge

One of six men charged with possession of 139.6 grams of cannabis in Lakeba in June has pleaded guilty.
Elia Marau entered his plea while appearing before Chief Magistrate Josaia Waqaivolavola at the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday.
The other accused — Sekove Tikoiserea, Paula Draunidalo, Jone Vakarisi and Jokini Deni — pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of illicit drugs.

A fifth accused, Nikotimo Vasuturaga, was absent from court and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
During proceedings, all five accused present waived their right to legal representation and opted to represent themselves.
The court confirmed Marau was not forced to enter a guilty plea. State prosecutors sought time to file the summary of facts in his matter.
The case has been adjourned to January 20 for mention, when a hearing date will be fixed for the remaining accused.
