The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) has confirmed that all 27 maximum-security inmates who had been on a hunger strike since Wednesday, 13 August, ended their protest this morning.

FCS said the hunger strike ended when the two strike leaders ate breakfast this morning which was then followed by the remaining inmates later in the morning.

The service highlighted the important role of the vanua, church, and family members as partners in the prisoners’ holistic rehabilitation and social reintegration.

“The Fiji Corrections Service remains committed to providing safe, secure, and humane treatment of offenders,” the statement said.

In an earlier statement, the FCS said labelled the strikers as inmates who “intermittently disregard the rules and regulations of the institution” and claimed their grievances stem from stricter operational measures under new leadership, which have curbed smuggling of contraband such as drugs and mobile phones.
