A 25-year-old former intern nurse was sentenced to eight years and 11 months imprisonment by the High Court in Labasa for raping a pregnant woman.

The court heard that on December, 3, 2019, Prashant Nischal Dass, while serving as a relieving intern nurse at Nagugu Health Center in Macuata, raped the woman. She was six months pregnant and had gone to the clinic for her prenatal clinic.

Justice Vincent Perera said as an intern nurse he was part of the medical and health services representing the Government of Fiji.

He added that he should not have been assigned to be a reliever given that he was still an intern nurse.

Justice Perera said his act had destroyed the trust of the victim.

“You don’t need to be a nurse to understand not to violate the trust of a woman.”

He was given a non-parole period of four years and 11 months.

Dass was given 30 days to appeal in the Court of Appeal.
