A 23-year-old chef at a resort in the Mamanuca island group is in Police custody, suspected of raping a 62-year-old Australian national.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the alleged incident took place on March 7 at the resort.

Police were alerted about the matter when the resort’s assistant operation manager relayed the allegation after the victim reported the matter to them.

The suspect, after attending an island night programme, allegedly went into the victim’s room, pretending to be a security officer, and wanted to speak to the victim.

The victim let him in whereby they talked.

The suspect then allegedly showed a pornographic video after which he forcefully kissed and had sex with the victim.

The Australian arrived here on March 3 for a holiday and is expected to return on March 15.

The suspect and the victim have been interviewed as Police investigations continue.
