Many children in Fiji still face significant barriers to education, whether due to economic challenges, health issues, or lack of resources.
Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh, made this statement while opening the Foundation for the Education of Needy Children in Fiji (FENC Fiji)’s first-ever gala night at the Fiji Football Academy in Labasa last Saturday.
He added that recent changes in industries, particularly the sugar industry, have placed additional pressure on families, making it even more difficult for them to support their children’s education.

“A recent report by the Pacific Community, The Status of Pacific Education 2024, highlighted that while we have made good progress in making education free and accessible, too many children still face barriers,” Mr Singh said.
“Some children cannot afford uniforms or transport; others struggle with access to technology or even basic resources like safe water and sanitation in schools.”
He said this is where FENC Fiji plays a vital role, filling those gaps with compassion and action.
Over the years, FENC Fiji has assisted more than 40,000 children across the country, including those in remote and maritime communities. The organisation provides school supplies, tuition support, and after-school learning centres to ensure children have a safe and supportive space to study.
FENC Fiji’s national executive coordinator, Nirmala Nambiar, said their focus remains on ensuring vulnerable children receive the support they need through ongoing fundraising efforts.
When asked how much was raised from the gala event, Ms Nambiar did not disclose the amount, stating that the organisation’s priority is the continued delivery of assistance to children in need.
The organisation had aimed to raise $20,000.
