All schools in the Northern Division will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday 26 November 2025, due to worsening weather conditions.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro announced the closure this afternoon, saying the decision was made in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Management Office (NDMO) and the Commissioner Northern.

He also apologised for the delay in issuing the advisory.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused,” he said.

The Ministry’s latest Situation Report confirms heavy rain alerts for the Northern and Eastern divisions, a flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas, and an active trough of low pressure bringing persistent rain, poor visibility and high flood risk.

Multiple roads and crossings in the North are now inaccessible, while very heavy rainfall is causing soil erosion and blocked drains. Transport in towns remains normal, but services in affected rural areas have halted.

District Offices across the division recommended the closure for the safety of students and teachers, a move supported by the Ministry’s Disaster Risk Reduction Unit.

Schools in other divisions remain open, though parents and guardians are encouraged to use their discretion based on local conditions.

Mr Radrodro has urged heads of schools in the North to stay in contact with management committees, District Education Offices and the Divisional Emergency Operations Centre for updates.

The Ministry will continue to monitor the situation and advise when schools in the Northern Division can reopen.
