‘Failure isn’t the end’: Monfort Technical Institute dux inspires after winning top award

Believing in yourself is the first step to moving forward in life, says Mitieli Barisavu Yaya, the dux of Montfort Technical Institute (MTI).
Mr Yaya received the award from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who was chief guest at the graduation ceremony in Savusavu last Saturday.
After completing Year 12 at Saint Bede’s College in Savusavu, he enrolled at MTI.

It took the 20-year-old, from Nukubalavu Village in Cakaudrove, two years to complete his Certificate in Cabinet Making.
“I couldn’t complete my secondary school education because I scored low marks in the national exam,” Mr Yaya said.
“Failure in school doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. It is a time for reflection, to find out what we can do for ourselves and make use of other educational opportunities — just as I did by choosing MTI.”
“That motivated me to return to the education system instead of staying home was my parents.”
The second eldest of four siblings said he prayed daily to become the institute’s best student.
“I am so happy to receive this dux award, and even more excited to receive it from the Prime Minister, who is from my province,” the aspiring businessman said.
His father, Lorosio Yaya, a root crop farmer and the family’s sole breadwinner, said he often held prayer sessions with his children to guide them in life.
“Today I am a proud father to see my son accomplish more than we expected from him,” he said. “He will now be an inspiration to his siblings and build confidence to live independently.”
Mr Yaya was among 44 students who graduated.
