Opposition Member of Parliament Rinesh Sharma says the Government must raise back-to-school support to $300 per child.
He claimed that the current $200 was not enough leaving many families struggling.
Mr Sharma highlighted how families continued to face mounting pressures as VAT remained high, with the cost of living and the $250 involuntary school levy weighing heavily on households.

“Increase back to school support per child,” Mr Sharma said.
“Involuntary Levy of $250 vs back to school support of $200 means parents will find it difficult,” he said.
“Priority must be given to grassroots and vulnerable families.”
Reflecting on last year, he said many parents struggled to meet essential school expenses, adding that $200 was just not enough.
He argued that increasing support to $300 per child would provide meaningful relief, helping families plan and budget with more confidence.
He said targeted assistance would directly offset the most burdensome costs and ensure children start the school year equipped with what they need.
Mr Sharma added that Government must monitor back-to-school support to ensure it is used only for essential school items.
He said that if the Government cannot raise support to $300, it should at least ensure:
✅ Schools receive grants on time
✅ VAT and the cost of living are reduced
✅ Teachers’ pay is upgraded
✅ Back-to-school funding is properly monitored
✅ Fund-raising initiatives are controlled so parents are not overly burdened
