The Ministry of Education has announced plans to recruit 1,125 new teachers as part of its continued effort to strengthen Fiji’s education workforce and support quality learning across the country.
In his World Teacher's Day message, Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro thanked the 13,457 teachers serving across Fiji and Rotuma, from early childhood to secondary education.
“I extend my heartfelt Vinaka Vakalevu to all 13,457 teachers across Fiji and Rotuma, from Early Childhood Education to Secondary level, for your dedication, care, and tireless work in shaping the minds and hearts of our children,” Mr Radrodro said.

Mr Radrodro praised teachers for going above and beyond their duties — particularly those working in remote and challenging environments.
“Teachers do much more than teach. You guide, inspire, and support young people as they grow not only academically, but as responsible and compassionate members of society. Many of you work in communities far from urban centres, facing challenges that go beyond the classroom. Your commitment ensures that every child, no matter where they live, has the chance to learn and thrive.”
Over the past two years, the Ministry has rolled out several initiatives to improve teacher welfare, including salary upgrades and step-ups, full-day pay for ECE teachers, location and special allowances, and recognition of teaching qualifications such as STTC and IDTT.
Professional development programmes, both local and overseas, have also been expanded, along with initiatives like Women in School Leadership to promote gender inclusion.
The retirement age for civil servants has been extended to 60, and policy changes now allow teachers who previously left the profession to return.
Mr Radrodro reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting teachers through better policies, benefits, and professional development.
“The Ministry of Education remains steadfast in supporting you, not just today but every day, through policies, professional development, improved benefits, and initiatives that strengthen your role as educators and leaders,” he said.
“Vinaka Vakalevu for all that you do. We celebrate you, we honour you, and we are committed to walking with you as partners in shaping the future of Fiji.”
