The sacrifices her parents made inspired 24-year-old Sabhiya Shabeba Hassan to persevere through years of study and realise her dream of becoming a lawyer.

On Friday, the Ba woman reached a major milestone in her legal career when she was admitted during the Swearing-in Ceremony for Legal Practitioners at Suva High Court.

Ms Hassan said the achievement belonged as much to her parents as it did to her, recognising the unwavering support and countless sacrifices they made to give their children a better future.

“My father is a minivan driver and I have seen him work tirelessly just to provide for us, while my mother has been a homemaker,” she said.

The youngest and only daughter in her family, Ms Hassan said watching her parents’ dedication and resilience inspired her to keep pushing towards her goal, even during the most difficult times.

She described the ceremony as an indescribable moment for both herself and her family, saying it showed what could be achieved through determination and perseverance.

Ms Hassan said the journey had not been easy. Studying away from home brought moments of loneliness, self-doubt and setbacks.

However, she said her faith in God and determination to succeed helped her overcome every obstacle.

“I thank the Almighty for giving me the strength to reach this milestone,” she said.

Ms Hassan encouraged aspiring lawyers to stay focused on their goals and not let the opinions of others stand in their way.

“If you have a dream, work on it. Never let other people’s opinions hinder your decision,” she said.

She urged students to trust in their hard work and remain committed to their ambitions.

“Be inspired, believe in your hard work, work day and night, and one day you will be here too,” she said.
