Despite receiving a record $883 million allocation in the 2026–2027 National Budget, the Ministry of Education says retaining teachers remains one of its biggest challenges as many continue to leave for better opportunities overseas and within Fiji.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro acknowledged the issue following the Budget announcement in Parliament today, saying teacher retention remained a key priority despite the increased funding.

Mr Radrodro said the Ministry was working to improve teachers' welfare through salary support where possible, while continuing to invest in training and professional development to strengthen retention.

"The increased Budget is expected to help address staffing shortages by ensuring schools receive teachers on time and that students continue to receive quality education," he said.

Mr Radrodro said the Ministry's priorities under the new Budget included teacher welfare, student welfare, transport assistance and keeping children in school.

He also confirmed that the Government would continue the $200 Back-to-School Assistance programme.

"It will continue as a social support programme that helps families prepare their children for school by assisting with uniforms and other essential items," Mr Radrodro said.

On the proposed Education Act, Mr Radrodro said school levies would remain voluntary. Schools seeking approval for new levies may also be required to account for how previously collected funds were spent.

Asked about calls from teacher unions for a 20 per cent pay rise, Mr Radrodro did not confirm whether salaries would increase, saying the Ministry would review the Budget allocations while ensuring value for money and strengthening governance in teacher recruitment, remuneration and professional conduct.
