Kolitufui Tuisoso Soko’s pilot training has cost his family nearly $60,000 over the past two years. Now, an iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) scholarship is helping keep his dream alive.
The 21‑year‑old from Nukunuku, Lakeba, Lau, says becoming a pilot has never been just a dream — it has been a costly journey marked by sacrifice, faith and determination.
Now in his third year at the Pacific Flying School in Nadi, Mr Soko says the biggest challenge has been paying his tuition and training fees, which can cost as much as $560 per hour for flight time.

Over the past two years, his parents have contributed almost $60,000 to support his studies — a financial strain he says has weighed heavily on the family.
“I am truly thankful that through this iTaukei Land Trust Board scholarship, I will be able to pay for my fees this year,” he said. “It will ease the burden on my parents.”
Mr Soko, who also has maternal links to Narocake in Noco, Rewa, comes from a humble background. His father is a police officer and his mother is a full‑time homemaker.
As the first in his family to pursue pilot training, he says the journey has required resilience and strong family support.
Despite the financial strain, Mr Soko has remained focused on completing his aviation studies. He credits his parents’ sacrifices and his faith in God for helping him overcome the toughest moments.
“I am really happy and thankful for this opportunity,” he said.
He hopes his story will inspire young people across the country, especially those from rural communities, to chase their ambitions despite the challenges.
“My message to all young people is to study hard, pray and rely on God,” Mr Soko said.
For him, the TLTB scholarship is more than financial assistance — it is a symbol of hope, lifting his family’s burden and keeping his dream of flying alive.
