Young woman breaks barriers with plumbing qualification

Jean Elizabeth graduated yesterday at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa, completing the six-month programme and stepping into a trade traditionally dominated by men.

A 23-year-old woman from Tunuloa District in Cakaudrove has broken new ground for her family and community after becoming the first among eight siblings to graduate, earning a Plumbing and Sheetmetal Level 3 certificate from Pacific Polytech.
Jean Elizabeth graduated yesterday at Kshatriya Hall in Labasa, completing the six-month programme and stepping into a trade traditionally dominated by men.
Ms Elizabeth said her decision to study plumbing was inspired by frequent water issues in her village, where technicians often had to travel long distances to carry out repairs.

“I saw people always coming to fix plumbing problems in our village, and I thought I could do it myself,” she said.
“Water shortages are a big issue where we live, and I wanted to be part of the solution.”
Despite the challenges of entering a male-dominated field, Ms Elizabeth said she remained focused on her goal and determined to succeed.
She credited her parents, Agnes Mere and Maikeli Uludole, for their unwavering support throughout her studies, saying their encouragement kept her motivated during difficult moments.
“It does not mean you are small or limited,” she said.
“You have many dreams ahead of you and must chase them with confidence.”
Ms Elizabeth hopes to use her new skills to serve her community, improve access to basic services, and inspire more young women to consider careers in technical trades.
She also encouraged young people to believe in themselves and pursue their goals, regardless of age, gender or background.
