Ba Town is the first municipality in Fiji to open two Return and Earn sites, positioning itself as a leader in environmental sustainability.
Return & Earn Fiji representative Dwain Qalovaki made the announcement during the launch of the Fiji Agri-Innovate Competition 2026 at the Ba Town Council Civic Hall yesterday.
The Fiji Agri-Innovate Competition, funded by the European Union, marks a key milestone in showcasing innovative agribusiness solutions.

The event brought together government representatives, development partners, private sector stakeholders, competition finalists and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Mr Qalovaki said the Return and Earn system in Ba municipality was a collaborative effort between the Ba Town Council, the Pacific Recycling Foundation and Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited.
He said residents in Ba and neighbouring areas would receive five cents for every beverage container returned, including plastic and aluminium bottles.
“Ba has become the first municipality to open two Return and Earn sites, aiming to lead in environmental sustainability,” Mr Qalovaki said.
He said the initiative is expected to significantly reduce litter in public spaces, rivers and roads, while also providing fundraising opportunities for students and community groups.
“Through this programme, the Ba Town Council is promoting resource recovery, environmental preservation and community empowerment,” he said.
Ba Town Council special administrator Pauliasi Matawalu said the programme aimed to enhance municipal waste management, promote environmental preservation and empower the community by allowing residents to recycle bottles and cans for cash.
Mr Matawalu highlighted the collective effort of stakeholders, businesses and residents in driving meaningful change and resource recovery for the benefit of Ba Town.
