The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change launched its inaugural school waste management programme for the Northern Division at Labasa College today as part of International Day for Biological Diversity celebrations.

Minister for Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya reminded students and teachers that meaningful environmental change begins with small and consistent actions.

“By separating waste, reducing plastic use and supporting recycling efforts, every one of you contributes to a cleaner, healthier Fiji,” Ms Tabuya said.

“Labasa College now joins Suva Grammar School and Ratu Sukuna Memorial School in advancing sustainable waste management across Fiji, turning your school into a model of environmental stewardship.”

Ms Tabuya said the programme formed part of the ministry’s wider efforts to address waste and plastic pollution affecting communities throughout the country.

“We are rolling out a range of solutions, from community awareness programmes to the installation of trash booms in waterways, which are already helping capture plastic waste before it reaches the ocean,” she said.

She also acknowledged the Ministry of Education for supporting the implementation of the programme in schools.
