In this financial year, a budget allocation of $1.7 million has been provided to Koroipita Model Town for land development, and construction of 16 homes,” said Maciu Katamotu.

The Minister for Housing and Local Government said this while officiating in the opening of 20 newly built homes in Lautoka yesterday.

He said the Koroipita Model Town had been outstanding through its provisions of safe housing and services for our under-privileged people.

“Today (yesterday) marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to provide sustainable housing solutions for our residents. It has enabled an entire generation of more than 700 young people to achieve better job opportunities and enhance socio-economic stability,” he said.

Mr Katamotu added the homes had been meticulously designed to not only meet the basic needs of shelter, but to provide an environment where families could truly thrive.

“Each house stands as a testament to our commitment to quality living.”

He said in the past six years, the Fiji government had provided a total allocation of more $3m for the development of fully serviced subdivisions with wide road access, electricity, clean water supply, sewerage treatment, storm water drainage and a garbage collection system.

The minister acknowledged the New Zealand MFAT for its continuous support and working with the Fiji Government to safeguard the livelihood of Fijians through this project.

He thanked the architects, construction workers who labored diligently and community members who showed unwavering support throughout the project.

A resident, Veniana Tabuacava, 57, said living in Koroipita opened the door of opportunities for her and her children.

“I am a single mother and I raised my five children here. Four have achieved better education and have settled down with their families. I am living with my youngest child who is a school teacher.

“Here we have the opportunity to attend workshops and learn more skills in setting up our business ventures. Here are all the different ethnic groups, we are just like one family,” she said.
