100 Bridges Need Replacing Within Next Decade

There are 100 bridges around the country that will need replacement in the next decade.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Biman Prasad, highlighted this in Parliament yesterday.

Mr Prasad said more than 10 bridges were at the point of critical failure.

He said any day, at anytime, the bridges may need to be closed because they would be unsafe to use.

“This will create huge inconvenience to our people,” he said.

“It will drive up costs of transportation and it is us, as consumers, who will bear those costs.

“I am told that the cost for bridges alone in the next 10 years will exceed $2 billion.”
