People gathered after planting fruit trees at the Savusavu Town foreshore on July 7, 2022.
For the first time in history, more than a hundred fruit trees were planted along the foreshore of Savusavu Town on July 7.
The initiative was taken up by Fiji’s Fruit and Agroforestry’s Expo director and Fiji’s Fruit Forum’s administrator, Andrew Malden who worked together with the Savusavu Town Council and members of the public.
Mr Malden of Salt Lake in Savusavu is working together with various stakeholders to plant trees that increase food supply and beautify schools and town/city areas.

“One of the purposes of having a tree planting programme was to help reach the target for Fiji’s initiative to plant 30 million trees in 15 years, reverse climate change, and make the earth a more beautiful, healthy and clean planet for our future generations,” Mr Malden said.
“I have recently organised a very successful tree planting event for Earth Day at Navatu Secondary School where we planted almost 100 trees and built a greenhouse for their agricultural program as well as started about 200 seeds which are now sprouting and will be given to the students to take home and plant where they choose.”
He has been working very closely with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Forestry for support, assistance and getting the trees needed for projects.
“We are also being sponsored by the United States Embassy in the funding of these projects, as they are very supportive of our activities and the mission that we have,” he added.
“As our theme is Plant the Trees and Plant the Future, I hope to build our relationship with the council and various stakeholders for this and future projects.”
Savusavu Town Council chief executive officer, Seema Dutt, thanked the staff and members of the public who took out their time on a rainy day to be part of this tree planting program.
