School teacher Alumita Matai Biautubu was in celebration mode yesterday, knowing her effort to house her students to study and prepare for the Fiji Year 8 Examination (FY8E) last year had paid off.

She performed the good deed while teaching at Naivikadi Primary School in Kadavu.

In the lead-up to the examination, she gathered her students to study, fed them, and housed them at her home to enable them to study well.

On Term 3, she was transferred to Ba Sanatan College.

But yesterday, she was overjoyed when she received news that her former school had scored a 100 per cent pass rate.

Ms Biautubu, 27, is from Drauniivi Village in Ra, with maternal links to Togovere Village, also in Ra.

She shared her excitement on social media on Thursday afternoon.

Ms Biautubu said the parents of the students she helped thanked her yesterday.

“A few students who needed improvement in their studies came home and stayed with me,” she said.

“Their parents assisted with food and other needs. Every day after school, I always try to help them with their studies.

“My solar light was used for them to study during the night. I set up a programme for them to follow. In the early hours of the morning, we would wake up and have morning devotions.”

“There was one student who was looked after by his relatives. This young boy faced difficulties at home, which affected his studies. He lived with me at home. I slowly helped him, and he improved on these results. Those students at home were my family.

“It was a painful farewell when I was transferred to another school. When I left the school, I was satisfied because I knew I did my best and knew for sure that all my students would pass their final examinations.

“Parents called and thanked me for helping their children. I believe, as teachers, we have to go the extra mile if we want better results for our students,” Ms Biautubu said.

She said it was the best feeling ever after the news of the 100 per cent pass for the school.
