After 100 years of drawing water from the well residents at the Matakitu Estate, Dreketi, finally had water running from taps in their homes.

Friday was a new day for them, a day like no other when the Minister for Rural, Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, commissioned the new mode of water supply to the community.

Government had assisted in the laying of water pipes connected to the water catchment at Nabavatu village in Dreketi to their homes.

“This water project reflects Government’s commitment to see that everyone has access to reliable, safe and consistent water supply,” Mr Ditoka said.

Eldest and estate spokesperson Patrick John Fox, said the feeling of finally not having to draw water from a well was awe-inspiring.

“We have had to rely on well water for so generations and years; this is such an awe-inspiring feeling,” Mr Fox said.

“Finally today, after all this time our children are finally drinking from tap water,” he said.

The 64-year-old said for so many generations the Fox family has lived through hardship.

Seven households occupy the 72 acres of the estate.

“I sincerely thank the Government, the Nabavatu landowners and elders for helping in this project,” he said.

“Water is a daily and basic necessity and its clean and safe accessibility is a priority.

“We have achieved a sustainable water source today.”

Mr Ditoka said the Government was committed to ensuring the lives of every Fijian is improved with water accessibility.

He acknowledged that while they have received many complaints regarding water projects, they have accomplished a good number.
