Over the past six years, the total estimated value of property fire damage was $105 million, which equates to an annual loss of $17.5 million.
Minister for Local Government and Housing Maciu Nalumisa highlighted this while addressing the community of Bulileka, Labasa, on Friday.
Over the past six years, from 2018 to 2023, NFA responded to 868 structural fires, of which 773, or 89 per cent, were residential fires.

“The effects are devastating to families and businesses, and collectively, they can be substantial.
“Despite NFA having conducted numerous community awareness programmes, house-to-house visits, and education institution programmes, the number of residential fires remains consistently high.”
The devastating impact of fire on anyone’s life can be crippling, so it is therefore apparent that there is no room to be complacent based on these statistics.
