$13K Boost for Macuata Fisher Clans
The Gonedau project, based in the village of Naduri, Macuata, aims to empower groups within the province, providing them with opportunities for employment and financial independence.

The Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation has approved $13,550 grant for the FisherFolk Gonedau project which is managed by Equalise Fiji, a Non-Government Organisation.
Foundation executive Ambalika Devi said this initiative marked a step towards inclusive community development in Fiji, focusing on the financial empowerment of gonedau, the iTaukei term for fisher clans.
Ms Devi emphasised the uniqueness of the project, stating, “This is the first of its kind in Fiji, reflecting our commitment to holistic solutions addressing climate change, food security, and community health. We firmly believe that climate care is health care at Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation.”

Project focus
The project focuses on purchasing fish and seafood resources from fishing communities, starting in Naduri and expanding to other communities in Macuata, with future plans for replication in neighbouring provinces.
With the support of the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation, the project has achieved significant milestones including establishment of the diversity hub by equalise Fiji, integrated into the Great Sea Reef tourism network. This hub has successfully collaborated with a commitment to sustainable practices and gender empowerment.
Secondly, the establishment of Vanua Levu Diversity in Fisheries Alliance (VL-DiFA), a professional network that fosters diversity and inclusion within the fisheries sector on Vanua Levu.
The alliance focuses on working with diverse community members in rural and coastal areas. A portion of proceeds is directly allocated to community development initiatives within Macuata, supporting the diversity net Gonedau project.
Equalise Fiji programme manager, Tevita Tokalauvere said commitment to diversity and inclusivity extends to creating opportunities for diverse community members.
“Starting with Macuata and expanding our efforts to Cakaudrove and Bua, we actively promote the inclusion of all individuals, striving to create equitable and supportive environments across all provinces,” Mr Tokalauvere said.
“The project represents a significant stride towards an inclusive and empowered community, setting a model for sustainable community development.”
He said the NGO was formed last year, and this is their first project.
