143,401 Fijians Access Walesi: A-G

To date, Walesi has given a total of 143,401 Digital Terrestrial Television set top boxes and 3738 digital satellite receivers to Fijian citizens.

While updating Parliament on Walesi, Attorney-General and Minister for Communications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said Walesi would continue to provide free set top boxes to every household with a combined annual income of $30,000 or less.

Upon proof of eligibility, Fijians will be able to access the set top boxes.

He mentioned that Government would fund the facilitation of TV sets and Walesi set top boxes in village halls, schools and government centres.

This will benefit 711 communities and directly give 127,980 Fijians equitable access to information.

Digital TV he said offers myriads of benefits for both broadcasters and all Fijians.

The benefits include; a platform for all broadcasters, spectrum efficiency gains and increased transmission capacity, improved quality and low energy consumption and maintenance cost.

Other benefits featured also included a wider choice of programming, better quality with less signal interference and parental lock setting.

He also highlighted that a number of maritime islands have received digital TV including Beqa, Vatulele and Kadavu.
