15% of Women Experience Violence During Pregnancy

Quoting Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka who launched the Fiji Country Gender Assessment (FCGA), Ms Tabuya said behind the statistics were the stories of real lives impacted by gender inequality and discrimination.

About 15 per cent of Fijian women experience severe physical violence during pregnancy.

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Lynda Tabuya said violence against women was normalised in Fiji and in the family dynamic, recurring from one generation to another.

She said 64 per cent experienced intimate partner violence during the course of their lives.

Physical violence accounts for 61 per cent while 58 per cent of women experienced emotional violence.
