An 18-year-old student who died in a road accident in Nadi early Sunday morning had dreams of becoming a school teacher, with plans to begin tertiary studies this year cut short.
The victim, Iokimi Vakatawabai, was from a farming family in Solovi, Nadi.
His aunt, Selina Lewaqai, said Iokimi was a hardworking and bright student who was preparing to continue his education this year.

“He was a very bright boy, and his wish was to become a teacher one day,” Ms Lewaqai said.
“Sadly, this happened to him, and we are all mourning. His boarding materials were already being organised for this year.”
She said Iokimi was returning home from a night out during the incident.
Iokimi was a former student of Mulomulo Secondary School and the eldest of three siblings. He also has maternal links to the province of Namosi.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wame Bautolu said investigations into the incident were continuing.
“An 18-year-old student died early Sunday morning after he was run over by a vehicle in Nadi,” Sgt Bautolu said.
He said the victim was allegedly intoxicated and was believed to have been sleeping on the roadside when he was run over by a passing vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man.
Iokimi was rushed to Nadi Hospital, where he later died.
Fiji Police Force Director of Traffic Control Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana urged young people to avoid walking along busy roads while under the influence of alcohol.
“When you are intoxicated, please avoid walking along a busy road,” SSP Divuana said.
“You will only put yourself and other road users at risk.”
The driver remains in police custody as investigations continue.
