Two separate road accidents happened in the West yesterday.

The first accident happened in the morning along the Queens Highway at Malevu Village, Sigatoka. Police spokesperson Sergeant Wame Bautolu confirmed that a Paradise Bus Ltd was travelling from Suva to Lautoka with 15 passengers when the driver allegedly lost control of the bus.

It veered off the road, hit a lamp post and landed in a drain. One passenger was injured.

“Due to the impact part of the metal from the lamp post flew off landing on the rooftop of a nearby house and fell through inside the house injuring one of the family members.

“Both victims were escorted to Sigatoka Hospital for medical treatment.”

Olosara Advisory Councilor Arvind Mestry said concerns continue about road use.

“The bus driver could have avoided that collision. Like this, we will no longer have faith in the bus industry. There is a need for a regular a spot audit by the Land Transport Authority,” Mr Mestry added.

The second accident happened at around 2.15pm at the Nadi Back Road which resulted in the death of a woman.

Mr Bautolu said the victim was heading towards Nadi Town. “The victim was in a vehicle which collided with an oncoming overtaking vehicle driven by a 32-year-old man.”

The victim and her 62-year-old male driver were rushed to Nadi Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The 62-year-old male driver is currently being admitted for observation, Mr Bautolu said.

Investigation is underway.
