2 DIE IN SIGATOKA ACCIDENT

The deaths of two people, Pisawaqa Sirovoama, 20, and Meri Nadaba, 25, have shocked families and friends and increased the road death toll.

They died on Saturday morning in a road accident.

Police said at about 2am along the Queens Highway at Kulukulu Sigatoka, a vehicle was travelling towards Sigatoka Town where the driver, who was believed to be heavily intoxicated, failed to negotiate a bend and hit an electric power pole.

There were two females and two males in the vehicle.

Police said two had died, and one remained admitted at Aspen hospital while one has been discharged from the hospital.

Police warn commuters

Fiji Police Force Director Traffic and Transport Control (DTTC) Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana said it’s sad that two fatal acci-dents happened within 24 hours on the weekend.

SSP Divuana said Police and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) would continue to be out on the road to ensure everyone’s safety.

“We call on drivers to be responsible and to consider the lives of their passengers and pedestrians,” said SSP Divuana

Workmate account

Mereani Qarikau, a workmate and friend of Ms Nadaba said they last spoke last Friday night.

“Meri was sending me her photos of the party in Nadi that she went to with her cousins,” Ms Qarikau said.

“When returning from the par-ty we kept on messaging each other until I fell off to sleep.”

Ms Qarikau said she was shocked to hear about her friend’s death.

“I could not believe as I was just talking to her on the phone the night before. I miss my friend. She is such a lovely lady with a beautiful heart. Our workplace will no longer be the same without her.”

They worked at a second-hand clothes outlet at Sigatoka Town.

Family reels in shock

Rosi Tagilala, a cousin of the two victims said the family is still in shocked.

“These two are first cousins. They are from Bua, Vanua Levu. Pisa’s father is still in shock. It hurts us so much that their lives have been taken away so early. The family is trying to come to terms with their death,” she said.

Police said the road death toll is now 61 compared to 76 for the same period last year.
