“This year’s theme of Preserving the Past, Envisioning the future carries a deep significance, serving both tribute to the Girmityas and a vision for the future,” Mr Singh said.
“This encourages Fiji to use lessons from the past to build a more inclusive, peaceful and prosperous future.”
The ministry has started with the preparatory work including:
- Documenting Girmit stories;
- Digitising historical records and creating Girmit database;
- Establishing a Girmit museum;
- Organising a collection drive for Girmit related artifacts and resources.
Mr Singh said discussion was underway with the Indian government about building a Girmit museum in Lautoka.
“We were conversing with the Indian government, and they have agreed to fund the new building,” he said.
“Nothing has been finalised yet; however, there will be plans to have a Girmit drive too for artifacts that people have and want to have them displayed in the Museum.”
