The next Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) in 2024 will be from Micronesia.

This was decided at the political dialogue mechanism meeting held yesterday between members of the PIFS and the Micronesian President’s Summit.

Chaired by Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, all parties have agreed to the appointment of two deputy Secretary-Generals for equal representation of the three sub-regional bodies.

Parties also agreed to a rotation of the Secretary-General and Forum Chair positions between the three sub-regions.

A separate Pacific Ocean Commissioner position will be created to be based in Micronesia for a term of three years.

The Commissioner will be independent of the Secretary-General and shall report to the Forum.

In addition, a PIFS sub-regional office will be set up to be in Micronesia with a Sub-Regional Director.
